When I think of a simple suburban backyard garden that gives lots of growing space and will work for most backyards, it’s this! We decided on two parallel beds, each measuring three feet wide and twelve feet long. The homeowner wanted it deep enough to work it without bending over. Good choice! These are twenty-four inches deep on top of a level foundation of ground-contact treated lumber and gravel. The arbor trellis is designed to coordinate with her existing pergola on the back porch. For a little extra whimsy, we installed a sitting bench at the end under the arbor.
